They say don't dip your pen in the company ink. Well I say YOLO.
The year was 2014, Natalie was 23, I was 24, and we both worked at Salesforce. I was in sales, Natalie in marketing, two departments that work on separate floors and don't intermingle too often. I had seen Natalie before in passing but never had the courage to talk to her. That all changed when I downloaded Hinge :). Hinge is a dating app that connects you with nearby singles. Hinge's differentiator is that it only connects you with mutual Facebook friends, so matching with people in your extended network was not unusual. One day on the bus home from work I was going though matches - swipe left if not interested, right if you are. After a series on swipe lefts (jk swipe rights) I came across Natalie Moore and instantly swiped right...Once the match was confirmed, it was time for me to spit my game. After a solid exchange back and forth of why she should get drinks with the most popular man at Salesforce, she finally agreed and we set a date for Tuesday of the following week. The weekend passed and Monday came. As a reminder I shot her a message saying "Happy Monday, still on for tomorrow?"... No reply... Not too worried I still went to Urban Outfitters after work and got myself dazzling new shirt for the next day. Tuesday came around so I sent another message "Happy Tuesday, still on for today?... the day went by with no reply... The whole time I had a million thoughts running through my head; "happy monday/tuesday? who says that!"... After 2 no replies I swallowed my pride and moved on, thinking that door was officially closed. |
Fast forward a few weeks later. Salesforce had acquired a new company and they needed a few people from the sales team to pilot the program. Lucky me I was selected and told I needed to work on the 25th floor once a week with the new team. That team also happened to share a floor with Natalie's department. Over time and after a number of awkward elevator run-ins, our relationship made quite a bit of progress. Eventually we got to the point where she agreed to a first date which took place in the kitchen at work where we shared a bowl of Sour Patch. The rest is history. Fun Fact: Hinge later posted a global ad where Natalie and I served as the "Success Couple".

Garrett has a permanent travel bug and is known for planning last minute spontaneous adventures. For some reason it didn't tip me off when he planed our Banff trip five months in advance. Even before I knew what his motives were, it was shaping up to be a perfect trip. We were so happy to have a weekend away, just the two of us with no responsibilities or commitments apart from spending time together. Being together in the most serene setting was extraordinary. I was elated, and unbeknownst to me, he was about to make me even happier than I ever thought possible. Our first morning of the trip we woke up early to go explore one of the most popular parts of Banff, Moraine Lake. Following rules is what I do best, so I was so flustered when Garrett started deviating from the paved route. He finally got so far off the trail that I refused to follow him any further. He eventually had to bribe me with a present to get me to follow him up the mountain. Once we arrived at the top, there was a view, a speech, a ring, and a very surprised girl who couldn't stop crying. |
